Google+ Launches Business Pages: The Muppets Are Leading

Brands known as “early adopters” of technology have been chomping at the bit since last summer to have a crack at launching their new Google+ business pages.

Their wish was recently fulfilled, as Google launched the new social media platform this week.

Inc. reported earlier today, “Just when a marketing strategy in 140 characters or less started to seem normal, the social media scene for businesses completely changed this week.”

In the article, SEO Moz’s Rand Friskin said “We should be willing to accept that Google is going to have a powerful social network on which we should (have) a social presence.”

In less than a week, BC Barcelona, Fox News and Angry Birds are among those with more than 19,000+ followers to date, with The Muppets on a fast track and headed to 30,000 at the time this post went live.

In a session at Blog World Expo LA last week, Guy Kawasaki said “Facebook is for people to connect with their friends and family, while Google+ will be for people to connect with their passions.”

While these early numbers may impress, it’s important to note Google at present has 50 million active users, and Facebook has 500 million active users.

Are people flocking to the Google+ brand pages because they are the social media flavor of the month or will they prove to be real customers in the future? If brands decide to incorporate a robust analytics strategy with their social media programming, and actually measure real ROI, they may be able to convert fans to customers and more closely tie social media to their business objectives.

It’s too early to tell.
